Volleyball Wins Season Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team began its season on a winning note Wednesday as the Red Raiders defeated New Mexico State 15-11, 15-11, 15-12. Tech convincingly won games one and two 15-11 and battled back from a small deficit to take game three 15-12.
"We were a little sloppy tonight," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson said. "But you could expect that from our first match of the season."
The Red Raiders were led by senior Lori Garber's nine kills and seven blocks (three solo/four assists). The six-foot-three middle blocker also added seven digs and finished with a .263 hitting percentage (9-4-19). Freshman Jenny Donohoo contributed .278 hitting and six kills, freshman Ann Romjue added seven kills and 11 digs and sophomore setter Skydra Orzen finished with 30 assists and 10 digs.
Texas Tech started four players that had never started a match in a Red Raider uniform including two freshmen and a sophomore. Tech (1-0) finished with 35 kills (.121 hitting percentage) outblocked the Roadrunners 11.5-9.0. The Red Raiders held New Mexico State to .103 hitting.
New Mexico State (0-1) was led by Anika Donaldson's match-high 11 kills.
Next up for Texas Tech is its own weekend tournament in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Four teams including SMU, North Carolina State, Wright State and Utah will travel to Lubbock to play in the round-robin tournament. The Red Raiders will also host UT-Pan American Sunday at noon in the Coliseum.
