Texas Tech Wins Nanook Classic Opener

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Texas Tech used double-digit kill performances from six players to register a 15-6, 15-13, 13-15, 15-9 victory Friday against Oregon State in the first round of the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanook Volleyball Classic. The victory improves Texas Tech to 6-1 overall and drops Oregon State to 3-2 on the young season. Texas Tech's second match of the Nanook Classic is against Alaska Fairbanks at 8 p.m. Alaska Time or 11 p.m. CT.
Senior middle blocker Lori Garber led Texas Tech with 20 kills. The 6-3 senior hit .390 (20-4-41) and helped the Red Raiders finish with a .365 hitting percentage (82-17-178).
Five other players reached double-digit kills including junior Colleen Smith who had a career-high 16 kills (16-2-33), freshman Ann Romjue who registered 12 kills in 37 attempts, freshman Jenny Donohoo who had 12 kills in 34 attempts and Janelle Jones who registered 11 kills in 16 attempts (.625 hitting pct). Sophomore setter Skydra Orzen finished with 10 kills in 14 attempts (.643 hitting) and a career-high 67 assists, a mark that ranked her 11th on the all-time Texas Tech school assists list.
Tech hit .438 in game one, .327 in game two, .225 in game three and .471 in game four. The Red Raiders battled back to win game two and almost won game three. Tech outblocked Oregon State 13-8 overall and outhit the Beavers .365-.287.
Oregon State's Sarah Bjeldanes finished with 25 kills and a .313 hitting percentage while Angie Shirley finished with 21 kills an da .361 hitting percentage.
Tech plays hometown Alaska-Fairbanks at 8 p.m. Alaska time. Oregon State will face Ball State at 6 p.m. Alaska Time.
