LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes liked what he saw as the Red Raiders worked through a 90-minute practice Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's home opener against North Texas.
"Today was probably the most spirited practice we've had since before the Arizona State game," Dykes said following the drill in Jones Stadium. "We had a little rain, but the concentration and the intensity was really good."
The Red Raiders finished practice just minutes before a strong thunderstorm moved through the Lubbock area, but the weather is expected to be clear for Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff. There will be no television for the game, but tickets are still available by contacting the Tech ticket office at 1-888-GOBIG12.
Texas Tech comes into the game 1-1, while North Texas is 0-2. The Red Raiders are coming off a 38-17 victory at Louisiana-Lafayette, while the Eagles are coming off a loss at LSU.
The news from the Tech injury front was brighter than the West Texas sky. Dykes said that offensive tackle Matt Heider (hamstring) and tailback Shaud Williams (bruised thigh) are both probable for Saturday's game.
Dykes also said that running backs Ricky Williams (knee) and Sammy Morris (shoulder) were to be evaluated by team doctors Wednesday night. Williams returned to the Texas Tech campus Wednesday after returning home over the weekend to be with his mother who was ill. He is not expected to play against North Texas.
