LUBBOCK, Texas - The preparations are nearing completion and all that's left is spit and polish as Texas Tech heads toward its home football opener Saturday against North Texas.
"It's time to play, and we are tickled to death to be suiting up here at Jones Stadium," head coach Spike Dykes said following a 90-minute practice Thursday afternoon. "There's nothing quite like a Jones Stadium atmosphere.
"I've said it before and I'll say it again because it's the truth, the Texas Tech student body is the greatest in all of college football," Dykes said. "They are what makes playing here fun."
Thunderstorms, which dumped close to five inches of rain on parts of Lubbock, moved out just after lunch, allowing the Red Raider staff to put together a practice in shoulder pads and head gear in Jones Stadium. Tech worked on final preparations and polish for North Texas (0-2).
Following Thursday practice Dykes took time to compliment the entire Texas Tech (1-1) squad instead of handing out individual accolades.
"I believe we have a chance to be a pretty good football team, I really do," Dykes said. "These are some really neat kids, a good bunch who as time goes by isn't going to have to apologize to anyone."
Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. There will be no television for the game. A crowd of more than 40,000 is expected. Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-888-GOBIG12.
