LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football players and coaches are getting anxious as the day approaches for their season opener at Arizona State with a two-hour practice in shoulder pads and helmets Thursday.
After a hot and breezy day of practice on the grass fields south of Jones Stadium, head coach Spike Dykes and the Red Raiders are looking forward to their first kickoff.
?We are geared down and ready to play next Monday,? said Dykes. ?It has been a long time because we had a strange deal with almost three weeks of two-a-days so our guys are anxious to play and are looking forward to it.?
With just two more days of practice, the Red Raiders put together a good showing at today?s workout after focusing on sharpening up their plays for Monday?s action.
?We had a really good practice today,? Dykes said. ?We got a lot done and things look real good right now.?
Heisman trophy candidate, running back Ricky Williams, agreed with coach Dykes on today?s performances.
?Practice was pretty good,? Williams said. ?Mentally the practice was very good and we were extra crisp on our plays. Mentally we are ready for this game.?
The Red Raiders will practice through Saturday before taking Sunday off and traveling to Phoenix by charter flight Monday morning. Kickoff for Monday?s nationally televised contest against the Sun Devils has been set for 7:08 p.m. CDT by Fox Sports Net, who will carry the game.
