LUBBOCK, Texas - With an open date and no opponent to prepare immediately for, the Texas Tech football team is using three days this week to work on fundamentals and getting healthy prior to the Oct. 2 Big 12 Conference opener against Texas A&M.
The Red Raiders practiced for two hours in shoulder pads and helmets on the surface of Jones Stadium Wednesday, using the drill to work on individual position work, team drills and the kicking game. Some of the workout was devoted to sneak preview work against Texas A&M schemes.
"It was a pretty good day, nothing to write home about, but better than yesterday," head coach Spike Dykes said. "We have a lot of guys getting better and they are starting to get their heads back up and bounce around.
"Nobody likes to lose, but when it happens you have two choices. You can circle the wagons, keep working hard and improve, or you can go crawl in a hole," Dykes said. "I can guarantee you there's nobody here crawling into any holes. "
Texas Tech (1-2) will practice again Thursday, take a team photo immediately following practice and then be off for the weekend. Game week preparations for the Aggies begin Monday. Texas A&M (2-0) entertains Southern Miss Saturday.
A limited number of tickets remain for the Texas A&M game and may be purchased at the Texas Tech Ticket Office in the North end of Jones Stadium or by dialing 1-888-462-4412 or (806) 742-4412 locally.
The game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports Net. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Jones Stadium. The Texas A&M game will mark the Red Raiders second nationally televised game this season.
