Volleyball Wins Two Friday Matches

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech won both of its matches on Friday during the first day of the Four Points Classic volleyball tournament at Lubbock's Municipal Coliseum. The Red Raiders defeated SMU 15-5, 15-10, 15-8 in the first match, then downed North Carolina State 15-7, 15-12, 15-10 in their second match. Texas Tech improves to 3-0 on the season and will play Wright State (0-2) at 3 p.m. and Utah (2-1) at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Tech 51 team kills and a .274 hitting percentage to defeat SMU 3-0 in the first match. Senior Lori Garber paced the Red Raiders with 12 kills and .333 hitting (12-5-21) while six-seven junior transfer Colleen Smith pitched in an 11-kill, .429 hitting percentage performance. Freshman Ann Romjue (16 digs) and freshman Jenny Donohoo (11 digs) each contributed eight and seven kills apiece. Sophomore Skydra Orzen chipped in 14 digs and 43 assists. The Red Raiders held SMU to 40 kills and .109 hitting.
Texas Tech's second match saw the Red Raiders coast to victory after jumping out to a quick 15-5 win in game one against North Carolina State. Garber banged home 14 kills in 21 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage while sophomore Yolanda Cumbess pitched in career highs in kills (10), attempts (13) and hitting percentage (.692). Tech held N.C. State to .056 hitting (36-29-124) and outdug the Wolfpak 59-38.
For the two matches, Garber led Texas Tech with 26 kills in 45 attempts for a .452 hitting percentage.
In other action, Utah (2-1) defeated both of its opponents on the day. The Utes defeated SMU 15-12, 15-10, 17-15 and Wright State 15-4, 15-12, 15-9 in game two. N.C. State defeated Wright State 15-10, 16-14, 15-2 in the day's other matchup.
Both Texas Tech and Utah are 2-0 tournament play, N.C. State is 1-1 while SMU and Wright State are 0-2. The Four Points Classic Tournament will conclude tomorrow with the feature matchup- Texas Tech vs. Utah at 7:30 p.m. An all-tournament team will be selected.
