LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech put the finishing touches on its game plan for Monday?s season opener at Arizona State with a 90-minute workout in shoulder pads and helmets Friday afternoon at Jones Stadium.
?The hay is in the barn,? head coach Spike Dykes said. ?Now we are just waiting to kick it off. We look sharp and crisp.
?The players are loose and seem to be ready to go. I don?t know if being loose is a good thing or not, but it sure beats the alternative,? Dykes said. ?I like to see people smile when they are playing this game.?
Friday?s practice was mostly situational team drills for both sides of the ball. There was also work on the kicking game. Dykes said the Red Raiders would work out very briefly Saturday morning to ?tie up any loose ends? and work on things such as bench control and where everyone is supposed to be during a game.
?We will just come out here and kick the turf and make sure everybody knows where they are supposed to be,? Dykes said. ?There?s some of these guys who haven?t been on a sideline with us before and they need to know how things are done. There won?t be much football going on.?
Dykes said that three true freshmen will make the trip to Sun Devil Stadium. First-year Red Raiders suiting up Monday night are tailback Shaud Williams (Andrews, Texas), defensive lineman Lamont Anderson (Irving, Texas) and kicker Clinton Greathouse (Roswell, N.M.).
Texas Tech and Arizona State are scheduled to kick off at 7:08 CDT. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. The contest can also be heard on the Texas Tech radio network and the Texas Tech Spanish broadcast.
Both the English and Spanish broadcasts can be heard on the Internet. Texas Tech is one of only two college football programs offering a Spanish broadcast in the World Wide Web. Miami (Fla.) is the other. To hear the broadcasts fans should click on www.texastech.com and follow the prompts.
