Red Raiders Win Final Game Of USC Series

After scoring just eight runs on 11 hits in the first two games, the Texas Tech Red Raiders exploded for 20 runs on 19 hits in Sunday's win over Southern California. Tech scored at least four runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to win their sixth game of the season.
Tech got on the board early with four runs in the second. Jason Rainey and Trey Lunsford lead off the inning with back-to-back doubles. Chaz Eiguren finished the inning with a line drive home run over the left field wall. It was his second of the season and scored Shaun Larkin who had singled.
The Red Raiders scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to extend the lead to 13-2. In the fourth, the Red Raiders sent nine batters to the plate and scored all four runs after Eric McLamore and Miles Durham were retired to start the inning. Rainey came through once again with a double that scored Scott Holzhauer and David O'Keeffe. In the fifth inning, Tech scored five runs on just one hit. The Red Raiders took advantage of four straight walks to open the inning and Marco Cunningham's two-run double to centerfield.
In the seventh inning, it was Rainey with a clutch hit for the third time. The junior from Klondike, Texas launched his second home run of the season with the bases loaded to give Texas Tech an 18-4 lead. He finished the game going 3-5 with a grand slam, two doubles, two runs and seven RBI.
Designated hitter Chaz Eiguren went 4-4 with a home run, double, three runs and three RBI while center fielder Marco Cunningham finished the day going 3-5 with a pair of doubles, a run and three RBI. First baseman David O'Keeffe was 2-3 with a pair of runs and two RBI.
On the mound, Chaz Ackerman picked up his second win of the season. He went 3.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits, a walk and four strikeouts. The right-hander left the game in the third inning with a sore arm. The bullpen continued to pitch well as J.J. Newman struck out seven in six innings of work. He allowed five runs on five hits.
USC catcher Beau Craig went 2-3 with a pair of home runs, two runs and three RBI. Anthony Reyes lost for the first time this season as he gave up eight runs on 10 hits, two walks and four strikeouts. The Trojans used seven pitchers in the contest.
A three-day total of 11,107 fans came to Dan Law Field to watch the Texas Tech-USC series. It is the ninth-largest three-day total in school history.
The Red Raiders will be action on Tuesday when they go on the road to play TCU. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tech will play three games at Long Beach State this weekend before playing at New Mexico on February 22.
