Red Raiders Drop First Game At Long Beach State

The Texas Tech baseball team was unable to hold on to a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh inning as they lost to the Long Beach State 49er's, 7-6. Tech scored a run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as they dropped their second straight road game.
Both teams got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a single run. The Red Raiders scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. In the fifth, Shaun Larkin's two-run single scored Marco Cunningham and Scott Holzhauer. Larkin finished the game 1-5 with a pair of RBI while Holzhauer was 2-4 with a pair of runs and a stolen base. Cunningham had Tech's only extra-base hit with a double in the inning. He finished the game 2-5 with a run.
Cory Metzler suffered his first loss of the season after allowing a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Starting pitcher Matt Harbin was unable to go past the first inning as he injured his left arm while warming up for the second. J.J. Newman relieved Harbin and held Long Beach to three runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Steve Rowe followed Newman and tossed 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit.
Texas Tech and Long Beach State will play game two tomorrow before wrapping up the series on Sunday. First pitch both days is scheduled for 1:05 PDT (3:05 CDT).
