SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
The Red Raiders dropped to 9-9 overall and 0-7 in the Big 12 following Wednesday night's 63-59 home loss to #13 Oklahoma State. Rayford Young continues to lead the team with 16.4 points per game, while Mario Layne (13.6) and James Ware (11.4) follow. Brodney Kennard leads with 6.9 rebounds and is third in the league with 2.5 blocks per game. Texas Tech is averaging 71.3 points per game and holds a slim advantage over its opponents by 3.1 points. Tech is hitting 44.9 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the three-point arc. Tech leads the Big 12 with a 70.9 free throw percentage.
SCOUTING KANSAS
The Jayhawks are 16-4 overall and 5-2 in the Big 12 entering Thursday night's game at Iowa. Kenny Gregory leads a potent and balanced Kansas offense with 13.6 points per game. Four other players, including Eric Chenowith (10.8) and Drew Gooden (11.0) also are averaging in double figures. Two others are contributing over seven points per game. Gooden and Chenowith lead the team with 7.4 and 7.1 rebounds, respectively. The Jayhawks are averaging 83.6 points per game and yield 70.9 points to the opposition. KU is hitting 47.8 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from three and 66.4 percent from the foul line. The Jayhwaks also hold a sizable advantage on the boards by 10.4 caroms per game.

The All Sports Radio Network will air all Red Raider games, beginning approximately 25 minutes prior to tip-off. The network carries nine affiliates across West Texas, including flagship station KKAM 1340 in Lubbock. Broadcasting veteran Jack Dale (play-by-play), in his 47th season, calls the action.
THE SERIES
Texas Tech claimed its first win in the series last season with a 90-84 victory on ESPN in Lubbock. Kansas leads the all-time series 9-1, dating back to Dec. 6, 1955. KU's biggest win, an 88-49 triumph in Lawrence, came two seasons ago on Jan. 24, 1998. The Jayhawks lead 2-1 in Big 12 play.
TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH JAMES DICKEY
Texas Tech Head Coach James Dickey is in his ninth season as the Red Raider mentor with a 154-98 overall record. Dickey has guided the Red Raiders to two NCAA Tournaments, including 1996's Sweet Sixteen appearance. Tech also has made a trip to the NIT under Dickey. He is third all-time at the University with 154 wins, trailing Gerald Myers (326 wins / 1971-91) and Polk Robison (254 wins / 1942-46, 47-61). The Red Raiders won the SWC regular-season title in 1995 and tied for the honor the following season. He became only the second coach in Texas Tech history to take a team through an undefeated conference season, when the Red Raiders finished 14-0 in the SWC in 1996. He also holds the distinction of the being the only coach in school history to record a 30-win season (1995-96). He is a two-time Southwest Conference Coach of the Year.
KANSAS HEAD COACH ROY WILLIAMS
Roy Williams is in his 12th year as a college head coach, all at the University of Kansas. Williams holds a record of 321-76. He was an assistant coach at North Carolina from 1978-88. Williams and Kansas in the 1990s won more games than any other Division I program and the Jayhawks had the highest winning percentage. Williams reached 300 victories quicker than any coach in NCAA history and the Jayhawks have won seven conference titles under Williams and made 10-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.

James Dickey has faced Kansas three times as a collegiate head coach and is 1-2 against the Jayhawks.
LAST TIME VS. KANSAS
Rayford Young scored 32 points in the final 8:56 of the game as Texas Tech notched its biggest win of the season, a 90-84 victory over 24th-ranked Kansas. Young scored 35 of his career-high 41 points in the second half and was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line in the final 1:46 to clinch the win. Kansas led 62-48 with 10:08 remaining before Young led a charge to regain control of the game for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech went on a 22-7 scoring run to grab a 70-69 advantage with 4:20 left. The Red Raiders took the lead for good with 3:03 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Stan Bonewitz. Andy Ellis posted his first-ever double-double in the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Bonewitz finished with 15 points. Cliff Owens also tallied double figures in scoring with 10 points in just 20 minutes of play. As a team Texas Tech made 30-of-32 free-throws, compared to 13-of-23 for Kansas.
MORE THAN A SHOOTER
Over the course of his career Rayford Young has proven he is more than a scorer for the Red Raiders. Young currently leads the team with 16.4 points per game, but also averages 4.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.

LOOK WHO'S LEFT
Maybe it's unique, maybe it isn't, but two of Tech's top six contributors are left-handed. Mario Layne and Jayson Mitchell average 13.6 and 6.6 points per game, respectively for Tech.
REJECTION RECORD
Brodney Kennard is rapidly moving up the blocked shots chart. Kennard leads the team with 45 blocks this season and ranks second on the single-season blocks list at Tech behind Tony Battie (68). Kennard ranks sixth all-time at Tech with 82 rejections and trails Tony Battie in fifth place by nine blocks.

RED RAIDERS CASHING IN AT THE LINE
Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in free throw shooting at 70.9 percent. Despite a 65.9 percentage in Big 12 games, the Red Raiders continue to dominate at the line. In 18 games this season, Tech has connected on 270-of-381 attempts. Rayford Young leads the team with 80.8 percent and is second in the Big 12.
INJURY UPDATE
Andy Ellis - Out for the season ... had surgery Tuesday (2/1) on left shoulder to repair damage after dislocating it against Nebraska.
Jayson Mitchell - Returned against Oklahoma State after sitting for one game because of a bruised ankle he suffered at Baylor ... not yet 100 percent.
Cliff Owens - Out for the season ... underwent ankle surgery during the preseason ... will receive redshirt season.

TEXAS TECH-OKLAHOMA STATE GAME NOTES
- Texas Tech held OSU forward Brian Montonati to six points and three rebounds. Montonati had 14 points and 14 boards in the earlier meeting this season.
- James Ware blistered the OSU defense with 4-of-6 shooting from three and 6-of-9 shooting overall. He finished as the game's high scorer with 20 points.
- Brodney Kennard recorded another four-block game, marking the sixth time this season he has done so. Kennard blocked a career-high five shots at Stephen F. Austin.
- Tech hit three more baskets than OSU, but lost the game at the line, as the Cowboys connected on 21-of-27 attempts, while the Red Raiders hit 11-of-13.
- For the first time this season in a Big 12 contest, the Red Raiders out-rebounded their opponent.
- The loss handed Tech is sixth-straight on the season and matched the longest winless streak in coach James Dickey's tenure at Tech.
- The loss also continues Tech's streak as the only Big 12 team without a league win.
TECH ON SIX-GAME SKID
Texas Tech currently finds itself in the middle of a six-game drought, its longest of the season. The last time the Red Raiders lost six straight came last season during a six-game skid.
TECH IN MIDST OF WORST BIG 12 START
Since the inception of the Big 12 Conference four years ago, Texas Tech finds itself in the midst of its worst start Big 12 play. The Red Raiders are 0-7 in league play, the worst conference start since the 1989-90 season.
TECH DEFENSE RANKS HIGH IN LEAGUE
Texas Tech is fourth in the Big 12 in field goal percentage defense. The Red Raiders are holding opponents to 39.5 percent from the field, one of four teams to do so. Oklahoma State leads the Big 12, limiting the opposition to 37.7 percent.
MALONE SETS CAREER-HIGHS
Moses Malone, Jr. came provided the Red Raiders with much needed bench scoring against the Sooners. Malone posted career highs in points (11), rebounds (6) and minutes (20). He also was perfect from the foul line on nine attempts.
NOT TO BE OUTDONE
Freshman guard Ronald Hobbs also posted career highs with seven points and 24 minutes against the Sooners. In the following game against Oklahoma State Wednesday night, Hobbs scored five points and grabbed two boards. He also dished out two assists. In the last two games, Hobbs is averaging 6.0 points and 23.5 minutes. Previously, he was averaging 1.3 points and 6.4 minutes.
WARE LIGHTING IT UP FROM THE ARC
James Ware continues to lead the team in three-point shooting. He has connected on 43 attempts and is shooting 43 percent from the arc. He is averaging 2.4 threes per game.
GET THAT OUTTA HERE
Texas Tech ranks second in the Big 12 in blocked shots with 5.3 per game. Kansas is the leader with 5.9 blocks per outing. Brodney Kennard is the team leader with 2.5 blocks per game.
TECH OPPONENTS RANKED AMONG BEST
Five Red Raider opponents are ranked among the top 25 in the Jan. 31 ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press polls. Indiana (11/11), Texas (13/16), Oklahoma State (14/13), Kansas (15/15), Oklahoma (17/18) and Iowa State (24/20) are all ranked. Rankings are listed (ESPN-USA Today/AP).
ATTENDANCE RECORDS
Texas Tech's sellout crowd of 15,050 against Indiana at the inaugural game in the United Spirit Arena marked the largest home crowd in school history to witness a Red Raider basketball game. The A&M game crowd of 14,324 is the second largest, while the Texas game drew 14,045.
TECH CELEBRATES 75TH SEASON
The 1999-2000 season is the 75th in the history of the Red Raiders men's basketball program. The school began the program prior to the 1925-26 season. Tech's first game was a 37-25 loss to Daniel Baker on Jan. 25, 1926. The first win was a 35-21 victory at Sul Ross State on Feb. 4 of the same season. The Red Raiders hold an overall record of 1,094-811 (.576).
NINETIES THE SECOND-BEST DECADE IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Texas Tech won 160 of 292 games (54.8 percent) played during the 90s. The winningest decade came during the 70s when the Red Raiders won 174 games. Here's a rundown of the top five decades for wins: 1970s (174), 1990s (160), 1980s (153), 1950s (146), 1940s (143).

PRIME TIME
Texas Tech christened the United Spirit Arena in front a live national audience on ESPN Fri., Nov. 19, when the Red Raiders hosted Big Ten power Indiana in the season opener for both teams. The Red Raiders have played five games on television this season and face six more opponents on the tube before the end of the season:

RED RAIDERS INK THREE PLAYERS
Texas Tech signed three players to national letters of intent during the early signing period - Marcus Shropshire (Grand Prairie, Texas / South Grand Prairie H.S), Jamal Brown (Dallas, Texas / Fort Scott C.C.) and Jermichael Miller (Houston, Texas / Wheatley). Shropshire is considered the No. 1 point guard in the state.
HOME SCHEDULE
The Red Raiders play host to 17 home games, including the two exhibitions. In addition to Indiana, Tech hosts North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southwest Texas State, Oral Roberts, Prairie View A&M and Centenary in non-conference home games. In Big 12 action, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Missouri, Kansas State and Iowa State all visit the confines of the United Spirit Arena.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Red Raiders make 12 road trips this season, including eight in Big 12 Conference play. Tech faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-El Paso, Stephen F. Austin and New Mexico State in non-conference action away from home. Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Baylor, Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Colorado dot the Big 12 road slate.
