Texas Tech Baseball Drops Slugfest

For the third straight game, Texas Tech lit up the scoreboard with 17 runs and 18 hits. However, the Red Raiders still didn't have enough as they lost for the first time this season 23-17 to New Mexico State. The Aggies went through eight Tech pitchers while scoring runs in every inning but the third and sixth. The 23 runs given up by Texas Tech is the most since Feb. 25, 1990, when New Mexico State won 26-9 in Las Cruces. It is also the most runs allowed at Dan Law Field since March 24, 1989 when Texas A&M won 27-2.
The game was back and forth early with scored tied at seven after three innings. In the third through sixth innings, the Aggies outscored Tech 8-2 and both teams scored eight runs in the final three innings.
For the Red Raiders, Miles Durham showed no signs of his injured thumb by going 3-6 for the second straight game with three runs, four RBI and three stolen bases. He now has a six-game hitting streak dating back to May 29, 1999. In three games this year, the junior is hitting .471 with two doubles and five RBI while swiping four bases.
Scott Holzhauer hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fifth inning. Holzhauer finished the day going 3-5 with three runs and three RBI. He also went 3-5 in yesterday's game. Third baseman Brennan Burns went 3-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBI while left fielder Jason Rainey was 3-6 with four runs and two RBI.
Josh Jones suffered the loss after relieving starter Chaz Ackerman in the third inning. Jones allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in two innings. Eight Texas Tech pitchers allowed 24 hits while walking seven and striking out six.
The final game of the series will be tomorrow at Dan Law Field with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Texas Tech will host West Texas A&M on Tuesday before playing Southern California next weekend in Lubbock.
