LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech opened their home softball season by splitting a double-header with Texas San-Antonio this afternoon in action at the Recreation Intramural Fields on the Tech campus. The Red Raiders won the first game by a score of 4-0 and lost the second game by a 5-1 count, moving their record to 9-22 for the season. UTSA now stands at 13-15-1.
"We hit a little bit better today, we just need to keep improving," head coach Carla Marchetti said after the game. "It was good to finally be at home after all the travel. Hopefully we can continue to hit at home and get some more wins."
The Red Raiders came into the game having scored only one run in their past seven outings. The Tech bats got going in the first game as six of the nine Red Raider batters collected hits. Texas Tech opened the game with a run in the first inning when catcher Kristi Tunnell singled to left field, driving in Sandy Butler from third base. The Raiders went on to add a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Amanda Renfro scattered four hits over seven innings to earn the win and improve to 7-12 for the Red Raiders while Denise Briggs took the loss for the Roadrunners and fell to 7-9.
Game two opened with UTSA taking a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Red Raider senior shortstop Paula Workman answered in the bottom of the second inning with a solo-homerun over the left-centerfield fence. However, from there out UTSA's Paige Whitley held the Raiders scoreless and the Roadrunners went on to score four more runs. Lynn Massiate hit a two-run shot in the fifth to cap the game for UTSA.
