Tech Takes Game Two In Baylor Series

After combining for five runs and 18 hits on Friday night, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor Bears slugged it out on Saturday afternoon with Tech winning 16-11. Texas Tech scored in every inning but the sixth as they won their second straight game and even the Big 12 record at 4-4.
Both teams started quickly with the score 9-5 after three innings. Baylor struck first with three in the top of th first, but Tech answered in the bottom half of the inning with three of their own. Chaz Eiguren provided the big hit in the first with a double to centerfield that scored Scott Holzhauer and Shaun Larkin. Jason Rainey scored Eiguren with a double to right center to even the game at three.
Tech added one in the second and five in the third. In the second, Trey Lunsford, who went 4-5 with three runs and three RBI, doubled to lead off the inning. He later scored on a two-out single to rightfield by Larkin. In the third frame, Tech went through three Baylor pitchers and sent 10 batters to the plate. Chad Landry lead off the inning with his second home run in his last three games. From there, the Red Raiders took advantage of three walks and an error to build a 9-5 lead.
Tech added three more in the fourth on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. Rainey and Marco Cunningham opened the fourth with back-to-back walks and later scored. Rainey scored on a balk by Baylor pitcher Paul Thorp and a single by Lunsford plated Cunningham. Lunsford scored the third run of the inning on a single to center by Larkin.
In the fifth inning, Rainey walked and later scored on a throwing error by Thorp. The only inning Tech didn't score was the sixth as McLamore, Holzhauer and Larkin were retired in order.
The Red Raiders scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eigth while Baylor added three in the top half of the seventh. Cunningham, who was 2-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, blasted his first home run of the season in the seventh. In the eighth, Lunsford lead off the inning with his first homer of the year. It was a solo shot over the rightfield wall.
Kevin Tracey earned his second straight save and third of the season with 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out two. Steve Rowe was credited with his team-high fourth win of the year after allowing three runs on one hit, five walks and three strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Starter Cory Metzler went 4.2 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on five hits, five walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, five batter recorded multihit games and only Mark Austry and Eric McLamore were held hitless. Eiguren finished the game with three RBI, two runs and three hits in five at bats.
The finale of the three-game series will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest (Cox Cable Channel 20) and is the first Big 12 game to be televised this season. The Red Raiders are now 15-13 on the season and 4-4 in the Big 12. Baylor is 18-7 and 5-3 in conference play.
