LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 40 Texas Tech travels to St. George, Utah, this weekend for the Utah-Dixie Classic Monday and Tuesday. The Red Raiders have had a bit of success during the last two seasons it has traveled to the event, winning the title two years ago and following up with a second-place finish last season.
The 5,882-yard, par 72 Sunbrook Golf Course is the host course for the 25-team event, which tees off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Monday. The tournament format consists of 54 holes with 27 to be played each day.
Senior Jamie Vannoy (Sandy, Ore.) won the event in 1998 and finished in a tie for eighth at last year's tournament. She currently leads the Red Raiders with 76.7 strokes per round and is the only Red Raider to play in all seven events this season.
Joining Vannoy in the tournament are freshmen Melanie Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Stephanie Dukes (N. Richland Hills, Texas). Hunt is averaging 78.7 strokes, while Dukes is second behind Vannoy with 78.3 strokes per round. Priscillia Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Jennifer Newhouse (Bryan, Texas) round out the fivesome for the Red Raiders. Hunt and Newhouse are averaging 78.5 and 78.7 strokes, respectively.
The Red Raiders are coming off of a fifth-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Hawaii Thursday. The field boasted five top 20 teams. Texas Tech finished ahead of No. 20 Oklahoma.
