LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head basketball coach James Dickey announced today that Mikey Marshall (Tulia, Texas / Tulia) has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University and compete for the Red Raiders beginning in the 2000-01 season. Marshall is the first signee of the spring period and fourth overall.
"We are excited and pleased that Mikey decided to be a Red Raider," Dickey said. "He is a versatile athlete with size. He has excellent court vision and a great stroke as a shooter. He is an outstanding young man who will be an excellent addition to our recruiting class and program."
Marshall (6-5, 200) averaged 19.1 points and 12.8 rebounds per game to earn 3A First-Team All-State honors at Tulia High School. The District 1-AAA Most Valuable Player shot 52.4 percent from the field, blocked 2.4 shots, dished out 4.8 assists and grabbed 3.5 steals during his senior season. Marshall also nabbed the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 3A Player of the Year honors and was a McDonald's All-American nominee. He participated in the TABC and Texas High School Coaches Association all-star games and was named to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's and Amarillo Globe-News' super teams.
"Texas Tech is getting a great basketball player, but even more, a great person," Tulia High School head coach Tommy Miller said. "Mikey's a versatile player. He doesn't have any one thing that stands out, he just has a good overall game. He's an unselfish player and fierce competitor."
During Marshall's four years at Tulia, the Hornets posted a 112-14 record and finished as state runners-up during his freshman campaign. He averaged 13.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.9 steals during his career. In addition to his numerous honors as a senior, he also earned First-Team All-State accolades as a sophomore and junior and is a three-time member of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's All-South Plains Super Team.
Marshall joins fall signees Marcus Shropshire (Grand Prairie, Texas / South), Jamal Brown (Dallas, Texas / Fort Scott CC) and Jermichael Miller (Houston, Texas / Wheatley) in the 2000 recruiting class.
