KANSAS CITY, Mo-Texas Tech women's tennis team exited the Big 12 Championships today with a defeat to No. 6-seeded Nebraska, losing 5-0. The Red Raiders finish their first season under Coach Virginia Brown with a 3-18 mark.
Tech started off slow and could not get it rolling. In singles position No. 1, Ayako Suzuki fell to Nebraska's Sandra Noetzel 6-0, 6-3. Suzuki ended the year earning the most wins on the squad with 10. Michelle Colaninni fell to Ndali Ijomah in position No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. Position No. 3 was a battle between Tech's Sonnia Orellana and Nebraska's Katarina Balan. Balan defeated Orellana in two straight sets 7-6(1), 6-3. In position No. 4 and 5, Red Raiders Noel Ruiz and Renee Pereira were defeated respectively. Position No. 6 did not finish with Nebraska's Amy Frisch against Tech's Christen Emmett. Doubles play did not play because Nebraska won the match in singles play.
"It has been a tough year. We have five freshman, two of which are walk-ons," Coach Virginia Brown said. "Our No. 2 player played well in her spot but when you move everyone else up in the lineup, it gets tough."
Nebraska advances to the second round to take on Texas A&M tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
