LUBBOCK, Texas - With the dog days of preseason camp beginning to set in, the Texas Tech football staff shook things up Friday afternoon by practicing in two different places. The Red Raiders began the practice on the grass practice fields and finished on the artificial turf of Jones SBC Stadium.
"This is our home field and we need to start getting used to it," head coach Mike Leach said as players drifted out of Jones SBC Stadium. "We want to keep our legs rested by practicing on the grass, but at the same time we need to know this game field inside out."
Leach said the Red Raiders would work on the artificial turf at least two more times during preseason camp and then work in the stadium on Thursdays during the season.
The venue change seemed to have kick started the Tech players. After calling Thursday's practice "a little ragged", Leach came away from the three-hour practice feeling better.
"We did a good job of pushing through the soreness," Leach said. "Our effort and execution was better today."
Leach singled out the work of two players from each side of the ball Friday. He praised the work of freshman running back Foy Munlin (Dalllas-Kimball) and sophomore H-running back Shaud Williams (Andrews) from the offense side of the line of scrimmage. Senior defensive tackle Kris Kocurek (Caldwell) and senior linebacker Dorian Pitts (Lubbock-Monterey) also caught his eye.
"I thought Foy, Shaud and Kris all had good days," Leach said, "but the one player who has played consistently all through camp is Dorian Pitts."
Texas Tech is scheduled to practice twice Saturday before taking Sunday off. Saturday drills begin at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the practice facility. All Red Raider practices are open to the public.
