LUBBOCK, Texas - With temperatures nearing 100-degrees, the Texas Tech football team ended its first full week of preseason camp with a 90-minute scrimmage in the second of two practices on Saturday.
After working for almost three hours in shorts and helmets Saturday morning, the Red Raiders put on full gear for the afternoon session. Following an hour working on position and individual fundamental drills and a period for special teams, the practice closed with the scrimmage.
"I thought the afternoon practice was good," head coach Mike Leach said. "We did a lot better job pushing through the bumps and bruises than we did in the morning.
"The defense did a real good job, but I thought we were a little uneven on offense at times," Leach said. "There are some things we need to iron out on both sides of the ball, but overall I am encouraged."
The scrimmage featured a pair of touchdown runs, a 1-yarder by senior Ricky Williams and an 8-yarder by freshman Wes Welker. Williams was the feature back with the first offense while wearing the "off-limits" red jersey normally reserved for quarterbacks.
"We wanted to get Ricky some work, but we quick-whistled him before contact," Leach said. "Still, he looked good considering the limited number of repetitions he has had."
Other scores came on a 2-yard pass from Kliff Kingsbury to Derek Dorris early in the scrimmage and a 51-yard pass from Nathan Chandler to Josh Reynolds on the final play of the day.
Linebacker Toby Shain and cornerback Eric Cooper recorded interceptions for the second defense. Safety Paul McClendon also returned a fumble 25 yards to add to the big play totals for the defense.
The Red Raiders will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field for two workouts Monday.
