LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech practiced under the lights Monday night on the grass practice fields east of the Athletic Training Center, officially kicking off game week preparations for this Saturday's game against New Mexico. The evening practiced began at 7:30 p.m. and lasted two hours and 15 minutes.
Both sides of the ball worked through routine drills early on, while the latter half of the practice was devoted to a mixture of special team and team drills. Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Greg McMackin showered praise on the work of the defense during the preseason.
"The guys are running to the ball well and have done everything we have asked them to do," McMackin said. "All we need is a game.
"We have 16 to 18 guys who could be starters," McMackin added. "We've been pleased with their work ethic."
Following practice the team voted linebacker Dorian Pitts as the fifth captain for the game. In addition to Ricky Williams, Kliff Kingsbury, Kris Kocurek and Devin Lemons, the team will elect a rotating team captain each week during the season.
