LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach was singing a happier tune as the Red Raiders completed the third day and fourth practice of preseason drills Monday afternoon with a 2? -hour workout in shoulder pads and head gear.
"A great practice, excellent," said Leach, who was not as happy following Sunday's drills. "Today was better than any day we had in the spring and significantly better than a fourth practice should be."
Monday's practice was similar to the first three workouts of training camp, with position work, pass skeleton and protection, inside drills, a team period and two special teams periods.
"Today was a day to repeat some things, but we worked on a few new segments and new wrinkles," Leach said. "Basically we threw it well, caught it well and ran around well on defense. The legs came back quicker than I thought they would."
Texas Tech will practice again Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons before taking Thursday off. Two-a-day drills resume Friday and Saturday.
The Red Raiders open the season Aug. 26 by hosting New Mexico in the Hispanic College Fund Football Classic at Jones SBC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
