LUBBOCK, Texas - The Houston Astros announced on Saturday that former Red Raider standout Keith Ginter will be making his Major League debut with the team against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
The Astros purchased the contracts of Ginter and Morgan Ensberg from Double A Round Rock. In order to make room for both players on the 40-man roster, infielders Craig Biggio and Tripp Cromer have been transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled lists.
Ginter will go to Houston after leading the Round Rock Express to the Texas League Championship title after beating Wichita four games to one. The series wrapped up last night in Round Rock with the Express defeating Wichita 8-4 in front of the largest crowd ever at Dell Diamond.
Ginter, 24, led the Express with a .400 average in the series, including six home runs and eight RBI. The second baseman batted .333 during the regular season, notching 30 doubles, three triples, 26 home runs and 92 RBI. He was named Most Valuable Player for both the Express and the Texas League upon the conclusion of the regular season.
Ginter is third on the all-time career list at Texas Tech for runs scored (190) and second in slugging percentage (.726). He is the first Red Raider to appear on a Major League roster since Travis Smith played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1998.
