Tech Runners Advance With Record Times

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field squad came away with excellent results after the first day of the Houston Invitational in Houston, Texas, on Friday.
The Red Raiders advanced sprinters in the 60-meter dash on both the men's and women's side of the event, including personal-best marks for all of the ladies.
Senior Tami Zachary led the way for the women with a time of 7.51, followed by Tiffany Green's mark of 7.55 and 7.56 for Monique-Wright Cruse. All three will run in the 60m final on Saturday.
Senior sprinter Reggie Hill and freshman Saidric Williams ran the top two times in the men's 60m preliminaries, with Hill posting a time of 6.78 and Williams at 6.79.
Also advancing into finals on Saturday were Melonie Barrow and Ngozi Iwu, who both moved on in the 400 meters. Ngozi posted a time of 56.15, and Barrow followed at 57.70.
Zachary and Wright-Cruse also moved on in the 200 meters, with Zachary running 24.80 and Wright-Cruse posting a personal-best mark of 24.96.
Ryan Curry and Branum Noble continued their good work in the weight throw. After finishing 1-2 in last week's Oklahoma Classic, Curry and Noble took second and third in Friday's event. Curry threw 51-7, followed by Noble's mark of 50-9.5.
Ken Wilson also had an excellent showing for the Red Raiders in the pole vault with a mark of 15-7.
Several field event preliminaries and finals will be held early Saturday afternoon, followed by the finals of the running events.
After concluding the Houston Invitational on Saturday, the Red Raiders will host the Texas Tech Open on the new indoor track at the ATC on the Tech campus on Friday and Saturday, February 2-3.
