LUBBOCK, Texas - Angela Mooney and Ann Romjue tallied 11 kills each to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 3-0 shutout of the Iowa State Cyclones in Big 12 Conference action on Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 while Iowa State falls to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the league. Tonight's match was played inside the practice gym due to tomorrow night's Rod Stewart concert. The gym, located inside the United Spirit Arena, was reconfigured to seat approximately 500 fans with 436 of those seats filled for the match.
The Red Raiders were able to easily win game-one of the match by a score of 30-21 but ran into trouble in game-two before final pulling out the win to go ahead 2-0 at intermission. Iowa State took a 24-21 lead late in the second game by taking advantage of a porous Texas Tech defense. Tech responded with a 4-0 scoring run to tie the game and Tech eventually won in extra scoring.
It was all Texas Tech in the third-game as the duo of sophomore Angela Mooney and junior Ann Romjue was just too much for the Cylcones to handle. Mooney and Romjue combined for 22 kills (11 each) and 26 digs to lead Texas Tech on the evening. As a team the Red Raiders hit .205 with 70 digs while Iowa State managed just 44 digs as team and a .102 combined hitting percentage.
Texas Tech will travel to Lawrence, Kan. on Friday afternoon for a Saturday match-up with the Kansas Jayhawks. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Horejsi Athletics Center on University of Kansas campus.
