LUBBOCK, Texas - Heather Hughes-Justice tallied a career-high 21 kills to pace the Texas Tech volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (30-22, 30-21, 30-27) of the New Mexico Lobos on Monday night at the United Spirit Arena.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 10-4 overall and now turns its preparations for a key match with the Texas A&M Aggies on Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena.
Texas Tech jumped on New Mexico (3-11) early on in the first game in rout to a 30-22 win to give the Red Raiders the early 1-0 lead. New Mexico setter Kelly Griffin kept the Lobos alive in the second game of the match with three crucial kills helping the Lobos extend a 14-10 lead early in the game. Texas Tech spurred a 9-0 scoring rally on the heels of freshman outside hitter Kelly Johnson to take a 19-14 lead and the Red Raiders never relinquished that lead as Tech won 30-21 to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
New Mexico gave the Red Raiders all they could handle in the third game as the Lobos led much of the game. After falling behind 26-24 late in the game, senior outside hitter Heather Hughes-Justice rallied the Red Raider offense with three consecutive kills to give Tech a 27-26 lead. Sophomore middle blocker Angela Mooney sealed the match for Tech as she put down two hard hit kills to give Texas Tech a 30-27 win in game-three.
Heather Hughes-Justice led Texas Tech on the evening with 21 kills on .366 hitting while junior Melissa McGehee put down 17 kills on .464 hitting.
