THE TEXAS TECH-OKLAHOMA SERIES
Texas Tech trails 6-2 in the series, but won the last game played between the two schools in Lubbock in 1999 (OU's last regular-season loss prior to the Nebraska game this season). Tech's first win came during the inaugural season of Big 12 play in 1996.
RED RAIDER NOTEBOOK VS. OKLAHOMA STATE
Individual
- With his third rushing attempt of the day, Tech RB Ricky Williams set the Texas Tech rush attempts record with 761. He finished the game with 19 carries and has 777 for his career.
- Williams' touchdown run in the fourth quarter moved him into second place all-time at Tech with 33 career-rushing touchdowns. He also rushed for another score in the first quarter. Williams also has rushed for a touchdown in five-consecutive games.
- WR Mickey Peters' 10 receptions this afternoon sets a new career high for a game. (Previous high was five receptions against Nebraska earlier this season.)
- RB Foy Munlin's touchdown reception in the second quarter was his third reception of the season and his first career touchdown.
- QB Kliff Kingsbury moves into a sole possession of second place with 44 career touchdown passes, surpassing Zebbie Lethridge who had 42 from 1994-97. Robert Hall (1990-93) is Tech's all-time leader with 48 scoring tosses.
- Kingsbury was responsible for four touchdowns during the game. He has been responsible for 47 career touchdowns (4
- passing, three rushing).
- Kingsbury also passed for 440 yards, his 2nd-best passing performance of his career and the 3rd best in school history.
- DB Paul McClendon's fumble recovery in the third quarter was his fourth of the season and the first one that he did not return for a touchdown. For the season McClendon has five takeaways with four touchdowns.
- DB Anthony Terrell's interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was the first interception and touchdown of his career. Team
- Texas Tech has outscored its opponents 119-37 in the second quarter on the season. In the last five games, Tech has held its opponents to 19 second-quarter points, while scoring 66.
- Tech has won three consecutive Big 12 Conference games (Baylor, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State) for the second time ever. The only other time Tech won three conference games in a row was at the start of the 1998 season with wins over Iowa State, Baylor and Oklahoma State.
- The Red Raiders are 6-3 and bowl eligible for the ninth-consecutive season.
- Tech turned in five drives of 80+ yards for touchdowns.
WILLIAMS JOINS ELITE COMPANY
RB Ricky Williams eclipsed the 1,000-yard career receiving last weekend and is only the second player in school history to rush and receive for more than 1,000 yards. Williams has 3,590 rushing yards in his career and 1,020 receiving yards. College Football Hall of Fame member Donny Anderson rushed for 2,280 yards and had 1,392 receiving yards from 1963-65.
HUNT APPROACHING SACKS RECORD
DE Aaron Hunt logged two sacks at Oklahoma State, inching him closer to all-time leader Montae Reagor. He trails Reagor by 2.5 sacks. Hunt's 10 sacks is fourth on the single-season list at Tech (had eight sacks last season).
PAPER OR PLASTIC?
The Red Raiders have made a habit of lurking around opponent's backfields. Tech has 27 sacks on the season, including six at OSU. DE Aaron Hunt leads the team with 10 followed by FS Kevin Curtis, DT Rodney McKinney and DT Josh Page with four each.
TECH OFFENSE SOLID ON THIRD DOWN
The Red Raiders were above average on third-down conversions at Oklahoma State, successfully converting 9-of-16 tries. On the season, Texas Tech has made it 59 times in 140 attempts for a 42 percent success rate. On the other hand, the Red Raider defense has held opposing offenses to 30 percent on the season.
PETERS THIS WEEK'S GO-TO GUY
WR Mickey Peters became the target in Saturday's game at Oklahoma State. Peters turned in career highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (100) against the Cowboys. He is currently fourth on the team with 40 receptions and third with 477 yards. Peters also has two TD receptions. Peters joins RB Ricky Williams, IR Wes Welker and WR Carlos Francis as the only receivers to catch 10 or more passes during a game this season.
CURTIS SECOND TO 400
FS Kevin Curtis has 405 career tackles and is only the second player in school history over the 400-mark. Unfortunately, with two regular-season games to go for the senior, he probably won't eclipse the school record of 480, set by Brad Hastings from 1983-86.
CURTIS NAMED FOOTBALL NEWS SEMIFINALIST
FS Kevin Curtis has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Football News Defensive Player of the Year award, the publication announced today. Curtis is currently third on the team with 82 tackles and is second with three interceptions. He also has seven tackles for loss and four sacks. Curtis is in second place all-time at Texas Tech with 405 career tackles. His 10 career interceptions ranks sixth all-time. Joining Curtis on the semifinalist list are Alex Brown (Florida), Wendell Bryant (Wisconsin), Rocky Calmus (Oklahoma), Keyuo Craver (Nebraska), Levar Fisher (N.C. State), Larry Foote (Michigan), Dwight Freeney (Syracuse), E.J. Henderson (Maryland), Quentin Jammer (Texas), Julius Peppers (North Carolina), Edward Reed (Miami), Derek Ross (Ohio State), Robert Thomas (UCLA) and Roy Williams (Oklahoma).
KINGSBURY NAMED DAVEY O'BRIEN SEMIFINALIST
The Davey O'Brien Foundation named QB Kliff Kingsbury one of 12 semifinalists for the 2001 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. The O'Brien Advisory Committee, composed of national sportswriters and commentators will vote again later this month. The National College Football Awards Association in a joint effort among college football award programs will announce three finalists Tue., Nov. 27. Kingsbury is the Big 12's top passer for the second-straight season, leading the league in passing yardage, completions and total offense. Tech's passing offense ranks sixth nationally. During his career at Texas Tech, Kingsbury has set numerous school records including career pass completions (689), career 300-yard passing games (9), career 400-yard passing games (4) and single-season passing yards (3,418 last season). Joining Kingsbury on the list of semifinalists are David Carr (Fresno State), Eric Crouch (Nebraska), Woodrow Dantzler (Clemson), Brandon Doman (BYU), Ken Dorsey (Miami), Jason Gesser (Washington State), Rex Grossman (Florida), Joey Harrington (Oregon), Eli Manning (Mississippi), Kurt Kittner (Illinois) and Chris Simms (Texas). The show will air on ESPN live from the Atlantic Dance Hall on the BoardWalk at Disney, next to the Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla. The winner and two runners-up will be honored at the 25th Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner Feb. 18, 2002, at the Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Texas Tech used 11 different receivers against OSU with eight catching at least two passes. On the season, 13 different players have caught passes for the Red Raiders.
TECH HAS STEPPED IT UP A NOTCH SINCE KANSAS LOSS
Through the first four games of the season, Texas Tech averaged 372 yards of total offense per game, which ranked among the Big 12's best. However, in the last five games, the Red Raiders have surged offensively. Tech has averaged 466.8 yards per game over the last five games, including a season-high 546 yards at Oklahoma State.
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Even though he is in his second season, IR Wes Welker's performance at Texas Tech leaves one to wonder how he escaped the universities in his home state of Oklahoma. Welker took over punt return duties midway through last season and has been one of Tech's top offensive weapons. As a punt returner, Welker already ranks sixth at Tech with 57 career returns, sixth with 613 return yards and sixth with 10.8 yards per return. On the season, Welker ranks third on the team with 30 points and is second with 88.8 all-purpose yards per game. He added his third-career punt return for a touchdown against Nebraska, an 85-yard jaunt that ranks as the second-longest for an NU opponent. He also is third on the team this season with 44 catches and four touchdown receptions.
NO ENDZONE TOO DEEP FOR McCANN
KR Ivory McCann has shown no fear on the season when it comes to returning kicks out of the endzone. In the season opener and McCann's first collegiate game, he returned a kickoff from eight yards deep in the endzone for a touchdown against New Mexico. Saturday at OSU, McCann almost toed the line at the back of the endzone before returning the kick 59 yards to the OSU 41.
KINGSBURY RECORD WATCH
QB Kliff Kingsbury set the record for career pass attempts with 1,086 and already holds the record for career completions with 689. He needs five touchdown passes to become the school's all-time touchdown passing leader with 49. Kingsbury also moved up a spot to third in single-season total offense with 2,848 yards this season. He needs 590 yards in the next two games to break the mark of 3,437 yards he established last season.
KINGSBURY ADDS ANOTHER 400-YARD PERFORMANCE
QB Kliff Kingsbury set the school record with his third 400-yard passing game in his career against Kansas State and added his fourth at Oklahoma State. Kingsbury threw for 440 yards against the Cowboys.
ROBERTS FINDING NICHE IN SENIOR SEASON
Senior TE Cole Roberts is making the most of his senior season. He already has surpassed his career total of 12 catches coming into the season with 34 this year. He also has 285 receiving yards and is one of the nation's top 10 receiving tight ends.
FRANCIS SOLID IN LAST FOUR GAMES
WR Carlos Francis was averaging three catches per game heading into the Nebraska game. Over the last four games, he is averaging 8.3 catches per game and 103.8 yards, including 169 at Nebraska. On the season, Francis is second on the team with 46 receptions for a team-high 636 yards and 13.8 yards per catch.
WALK-ON LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD
K Robert Treece has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Raiders this season. With no clear-cut frontrunner for the job during the preseason, Treece walked-on the first day of school and won the job. He is second on the team with 65 points and is a perfect 38-of-38 on extra points. He also is second on the single-season list with 38 extra point attempts and extra points made.
WILLIAMS COULD BREAK SINGLE-SEASON RECEIVING MARK
RB Ricky Williams - that's right, running back - could set the single-season record for receptions with seven over the next two games. Williams has 70 on the season and is in second place. He trails Tech single-season record holder Lloyd Hill (76 in 1992).
MORE ON WILLIAMS...
Ricky also has a shot at the career all-purpose yard mark. He currently has 4,829 all-purpose yards in second place and trails record holder Donny Anderson by 327 yards.
RED RAIDERS DOMINATE FIRST-HALF SCORING
On the season, Texas Tech has outscored opponents 184-99 in the first half. However, the real damage has come in the second quarter. The Red Raiders have scored 119 points in the second frame, 50 points more than the next highest quarter (69 in the fourth this year). Tech holds a 315-229 advantage in scoring over its opponents this season.
BIG 12 RUSHERS ROLLING TOWARD RECORDS
Led by senior Ricky Williams of Texas Tech as he continues his hard-earned comeback from near-career-ending knee surgery in September, 1999, active Big 12 rushers are climbing the charts after some standout performances. Williams became the fourth rusher since the founding of the Big 12 to surpass 3,000 career yards while Nebraska QB Eric Crouch continues to excel on the ground and in the air as the all-time Big 12 quarterback rushing pacesetter. ISU's Ennis Haywood used a 219-yard rushing day at Ohio on Sept. 22 to reach the 2,000-yard career mark. Kansas State's Josh Scobey became the seventh active Big 12 carrier to reach the 1,000-yard mark after his performance at Oklahoma on Sept. 29-16 games into his two-year KSU career-and had a career-best 204-yard rushing outing against Kansas on Oct. 27, 2001. Nebraska's Dahrran Diedrick, the first Big 12 rusher to reach 1,000 yards in 2001, joined Missouri's Zack Abron on the four-digit list at midseason. Texas true freshman Cedric Benson needs 105 yards against Texas A&M to reach the 1,000-yard pinnacle and is the top true frosh rusher nationally.
