THE COACHES
Texas Tech head coach James Dickey carries a 165-114 career record into Waco and is coming off the heels of a 66-64 loss at Missouri. Dickey is in his tenth season at Texas Tech and tenth as a collegiate head coach. He previously served as an assistant under current Oklahoma State head coach Eddie Sutton at Arkansas and Kentucky.
Dave Bliss is in his second season at Baylor and has a 29-20 record at the school, including this season's 13-5 mark. Bliss is a 26-year collegiate coaching veteran with a 494-291 record with head coaching stops at Oklahoma, SMU, New Mexico and Baylor.
THE RECORDS
Texas Tech is 8-9 on the season and 2-4 in Big 12 play following last week's nail-biting 66-64 loss at Missouri.
After opening the season 12-0, Baylor has struggled lately and has dropped to 13-5, 2-5 in Big 12 play. Baylor is coming off of a 65-51 loss at home to Oklahoma.
TEXAS TECH HAS WON FIVE OF LAST SIX IN SERIES WITH BAYLOR
Texas Tech holds a 63-37 advantage in the all-time series with Baylor, including victories in five of the last six games.
The Red Raiders knocked off the Bears 68-58 in the 100th meeting between the two schools on Jan. 9 in Lubbock.
The series dates back to the 1937 season, when Tech opened with a 38-28 win in Waco. The Red Raiders are 34-12 in games played in Lubbock and 24-23 in Waco. The teams have met seven times on neutral floors with Texas Tech holding a 5-2 advantage.
RED RAIDER STATS VS. BAYLOR
Center Andy Ellis has faced the Baylor Bears three times in his career and is averaging 12.3 points per game. Forward Cliff Owens is averaging 7.4 points in seven career games with the Bears and is shooting 60.6 percent from the floor. Owens leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.
LEADING THE BEARS
Terry Black leads the Bears with 15.4 points per game, followed by DeMarcus Minor's 13.8 points. Wendell Greenleaf rounds out the double-figure scoring with 11.2 points per game. Black also lead the team on the boards with 8.4 caroms per game, followed by Minor's 6.2. Baylor holds a narrow +0.5 advantage on the boards over its opponents and leads in the scoring column by an average of 11.9 points per game. Baylor is shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 30.7 percent from three and 69.6 percent from the foul line.
THE LAST TIME VS. BAYLOR - Jan. 9, 2001
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech took the lead with a 14-0 run before halftime and went on to beat Baylor 68-58 on Tuesday night, knocking the Bears from the ranks of the undefeated.
With the loss by Baylor (12-1, 1-1 Big 12), the only undefeated NCAA I-A teams are No. 1 Stanford (13-0), No. 12 Georgetown (13-0) and No. 24 Boston College (11-0). The Bears missed matching their best record since 1911-12, when they won all 13 games they played.
Andy Ellis had 15 points to lead Texas Tech (7-6, 1-1), while Marcus Shropshire and Jamal Brown had 13 each.
The Red Raiders held Baylor scoreless for six minutes late in the first half, scoring 14 straight points. They led 40-32 at halftime, and never trailed in the second half.
When Baylor got within 50-46, Texas Tech responded with an 11-1 run to earn their biggest lead of the game with 6:30 left.
Greg Davis, Wendell Greenleaf and DeMarcus Minor had 12 points each for Baylor, which played an easy non-conference schedule and was playing on the road for only the third time this season.
Baylor had maintained its undefeated record in the Big 12 opener, scoring the first 12 points Saturday and going on to beat Colorado 61-56. Also last weekend, the Red Raiders lost their league opener 94-82 to fifth-ranked Kansas.
RED RAIDERS PLAY THEIR SECOND OF THREE STRAIGHT GAMES ON THE ROAD
Texas Tech enters the Baylor game on a two-game losing skid in Big 12 play and is in the middle a of three-game road swing.
The Red Raiders (8-9, 2-4) are coming off of a 66-64 loss at Missouri, while the Bears (13-5, 2-5) have dropped their last four, including Wednesday's 65-51 loss at home to Oklahoma.
In the previous meeting this season, a 68-58 Red Raider win, Texas Tech took the lead for good at 24-23 on a Ronald Hobbs layup with 6:42 to play in the first half. Tech led the Bears 40-32 at the break, and led by as much as 14 points in the second half.
Andy Ellis led four Red Raiders in double figures with 15 points, followed by Marcus Shropshire and Jamal Brown with 13 points apiece. Andre Emmet came off of the bench and logged 10 points. Cliff Owens and Ellis led the Red Raiders with seven rebounds, while Brown dished out a game-high seven assists.
Greg Davis, Wendell Greenleaf and DeMarcus Minor led Baylor with 12 points each.
LEADING THE RED RAIDERS
Andy Ellis leads the team with 16.6 points per game and has led the team throughout the season. Cliff Owens and Jamal Brown follow with 12.5 and 11.7 points, respectively. Owens has been the man inside, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, while Ellis logs 6.6 boards. Brown is second in the Big 12 and ranks seventh nationally with 7.3 assists per game. Brown also leads the team with 25 made three-point baskets, while Marcus Shropshire has knocked down 22 extra-point attempts and is averaging 6.2 points. Andre Emmett comes off the bench for Tech to average 7.8 points per game, followed by Jayson Mitchell's 6.5 points per game.
TWO-GAME SKID IS FIRST SINCE DECEMBER
Texas Tech's current two-game losing skid is its first such drought since dropping back-to-back games to UTEP (Dec. 5) and Ball State (Dec. 8). Tech's last two games have been losses to Colorado and Missouri.
SCORING, WINNING TRENDS
Texas Tech has won only one game when allowing 80 or more points, while losing seven of those contests. The only win was a 100-98 overtime victory at Oral Roberts. The Red Raiders are 7-1 when holding the opposition under 80 points. The lone loss came on the road at Oklahoma State.
BROWN RANKS AMONG TOP TEN
Point guard Jamal Brown is second in the Big 12 and seventh in the nation with 7.3 assists per game. Marist's Sean Kennedy is the nation's leader in assists with 9.6 per game, while Kansas' Kirk Hinrich leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth nationally with 7.5 assists per game. Brown has posted four double-digit assist games this season. He dished out 11 in each game against UL Lafayette and UTEP. Brown handed out 10 balls against Texas A&M-CC and 10 more at TCU. In addition to his assists totals, Brown has recorded three double-doubles this season.
ELLIS TURNING IN STRONG SEASON
Center Andy Ellis leads the team with 16.3 points per game and is second on the boards with 6.6 rebounds. Ellis ranks seventh in the Big 12 in scoring. He posted back-to-back double-doubles earlier this season against UTEP and Ball State. Ellis has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season and has led the team in scoring in eight games and has four game-high honors. He also leads the team with five 20+-point games.
OWENS ON THE GLASS
Throughout his career senior forward Cliff Owens has had a knack for crashing the boards and leading Texas Tech in rebounding. Owens led the Red Raiders with 7.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 1997-98 and paced the team again the following season with 7.0 boards per game. After sitting out last season with an ankle injury, Owens once again leads the team on the glass. He is currently averaging 7.5 rebounds and has led the team in 11 games. Four times he has garnered game-high honors.
PHILLIPS NEARING 100 CAREER GAMES
Senior center Johnny Phillips is fast approaching 100 career games at Texas Tech. Phillips leads the team with 98 career games played. Senior forward Cliff Owens follows with 93. Tony Benford is the all-time games played leader at Tech with 121 from 1982-86.
BENCH PRODUCTION
Texas Tech is receiving an added boost this season from the bench. Tech's nonstarters are averaging 19.8 points per game - 25.7 percent of the team total. Last season, bench scoring averaged 11.2 points per game. The Red Raiders are 5-3 on the season when the Tech bench out-scores the opposition's bench.
TECH SUCCESSFUL WHEN LEADING LATE
Texas Tech is 6-2 when leading with five minutes remaining in the game. The first loss came to UTEP after Tech held a seven-point lead with five minutes to play. The Red Raiders led Missouri by two with five minutes to play, but dropped a two-point decision.
TECH GETS FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT IN TWO YEARS
Texas Tech's 60-59 win over No. 21 Oklahoma was the first for the Red Raiders over a ranked team since knocking off 24th-ranked Kansas 90-84 on Feb. 13, 1999. Both games were in Lubbock. The last time Tech defeated an opponent ranked higher than 21st was a 77-68 win over 11th-ranked New Mexico on Dec. 4, 1996. During that same season, the Red Raiders also defeated No. 21 Fresno State.
TECH'S STRUGGLES IN FINAL FIVE
The Red Raiders have had a problem in the final five minutes of games this season. The opposition is out-scoring Texas Tech 170-138 this season in the closing minutes. The Red Raiders led UTEP 71-64 with five minutes remaining, but lost 81-80 after yielding a 17-9 run. Tech led Oklahoma 57-50 with five minutes to play and narrowly escaped with a 60-59 win, while Missouri erased a minute two-point Red Raider lead in the closing minutes.
LEADING AT THE BREAK
Texas Tech is 6-1 on the season when leading at halftime. The lone loss came to UTEP after the Red Raiders entered the intermission period with a 46-39 advantage.
ELLIS NAMED TO PRESEASON TEAMS
Texas Tech junior center Andy Ellis has been tabbed by three college basketball publications as a preseason All-Big 12 selection.
Ellis is listed as a second-team All-Big 12 selection by The Sporting News and Athlon Sports. Street and Smith's has Ellis listed as an All-Big 12 selection along with Jamaal Tinsley (Iowa State), Kimani Ffriend (Nebraska), Drew Gooden (Kansas) and Bernard King (Texas A&M).
Ellis, who injured his hand last month, averaged 16.9 points per game and 8.9 rebounds during the 1999-00 season before dislocating his left shoulder against Nebraska in the 14th game of the season that forced him to sit out the remainder of the year.
