SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Texas Tech Red Raider softball squad split a pair of 1-0 contests Friday in the Capital Classic, defeating San Jose State before losing to Ole Miss to finish pool play in the 15-team tournament.
In the opening game of the day, the Red Raiders pushed across an unearned run in the fourth, and Amanda Renfro made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over San Jose State.
Renfro allowed just three hits and struck out nine, allowing only two runners to second base in the contest.
Carmen Grindell doubled with two outs in the fourth, and Emily Bone followed with a hard grounder to third. SJSU's Veronica Ramos' throw to first hit the glove of first baseman Karlie Reiss and rolled away. Grindell never stopped rounding third, beating the relay home to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 advantage.
Against Ole Miss, Tech was unable to get the big hit, stranding 10 runners versus the Rebels. Ole Miss got an unearned run in the fifth on two Tech errors for the final margin of victory.
Renfro suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run and four hits while striking out six. The Rebels Jennifer Hughes picked up the win, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts.
Tech takes on Western Kentucky at 11 a.m. PT in the first round of bracket play.
