Tech Drops 3-2 Decision at OSU

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Texas Tech softball squad dropped a 3-2 decision to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls Sunday afternoon, as the homestanding Cowgirls overcame a 2-0 deficit to take the victory in Big 12 play.
The Red Raiders (22-12, 1-1 Big 12) got an unearned run in the first thanks to a pair of errors by the Cowgirls. Tracy Cartier reached on an error by pitcher Tiffany Paper to lead off the game.
Sandy Butler followed with an infield single and Shauna Briggs loaded the bases when she reached on a throwing error by OSU shortstop Casey O'Neill. Cartier scored on a wild pitch, but Paper worked out of the inning with a groundout and a strikeout.
Butler beat out an infield single to lead off the third and scored on a double to left center by Briggs, giving Tech a 2-0 advantage.
The Cowgirls (18-11, 3-1) got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Lauren Bay, scoring Lezli Leathers, who led off the inning with a walk. OSU then took the lead in the fourth when Amanda Hayes led off with a single and Stephanie Hodges homered just over the left field and the outstretched arm of Tech's Eva Harshman.
Tech loaded the bases in the fifth when Cartier beat out an infield single, Harshman singled to left and Briggs was hit by the pitch. But Carmen Grindell lined out to second to end the inning and the threat.
Cartier walked to lead off the seventh and Butler reached when OSU second baseman Leathers dropped the throw from the catcher on a bunt. But Harshman popped up a bunt attempt and Briggs struck out. Grindell then grounded out for the final out the contest.
Amanda Renfro suffered the loss for Tech, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven. Tiffany Paper picked up the victory, throwing the first four innings for OSU, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Bay came in to get her second save of the year with three shutout innings of relief, striking out two.
The Red Raiders host 20th-ranked Texas A&M in a doubleheader Wednesday at the new stadium on the Tech campus, Rocky Johnson Field. The twinbill begins at 1 p.m. with the second game at 3 p.m. The home game will be Tech's first since a season-opening doubleheader sweep over New Mexico State on February 3.
