LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Amanda Renfro tossed 10 scoreless innings to lead the Texas Tech Red Raider softball team to a 1-0 defeat over 20th-ranked Texas A&M and a doubleheader split Thursday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field on the Tech campus.
Renfro struck out 11 and allowed six hits, and her teammates came through in the bottom of the 10th when Sandy Butler singled over the head of the third baseman, plating Rachelle Biber with the winning run.
Both teams had a bundle of chances in the opening game of the twinbill, as TAMU stranded 12 runners and Tech left nine on base. But it was Butler's single, her second straight game-winning hit in extra innings after last week's single at Oklahoma State, that got the job done. Butler had two of Tech's four hits in the contest.
In the second game, the visiting Aggies scored in five of seven innings to take an 8-6 victory.
TAMU got a run in the first, but Tech came back with three in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a three-run homer from Shauna Briggs, her third of the year.
A&M came back with three of their own in the second, with Angie Shetler driving in a pair with a double.
Both teams got a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Jana Baker led off the Tech fourth with a single and was pinch-run for by Tiffany Harrington. Harrington went to second on a groundout and scored on a single down the left field line by Amanda Douglas.
In the fifth a two-out single to right from Baker plated Carmen Grindell, cutting the TAMU lead to 6-5.
But the Aggies added a pair in the seventh before Baker hit her first career home run to left in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.
Tech travels to Lincoln, Neb., this weekend to take on the 17th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. Tech and Nebraska play at 2 p.m. Saturday, and conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
The Red Raiders host Oklahoma City next Tuesday, April 3, in a doubleheader at 2 & 4 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field on the Tech campus.
