LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla., this weekend, a 24-team tournament with a national field. Tech will take on Utah, Temple, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Georgia Southern in the round-robin portion of the event, hoping to advance to tournament play that begins Saturday afternoon of the four-day tourney.
The squad comes off a disappointing weekend after dropping a doubleheader at New Mexico State, 3-0 and 7-3. Tech made five errors in the second contest and lost the services of sophomore utility infielder Ashley Ready indefinitely after she separated her left (non-throwing) shoulder in the bottom of the fifth of the second contest.
The Red Raiders take on Utah first at the Speedline Invitational, a team Tech defeated 9-2 on Feb. 10 at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. Carmen Grindell, Andrea Joachims and Shauna Briggs all homered in the victory, Tech's first in the tourney as well as a win over a ranked opponent, as the Utes entered the contest ranked 25th in the nation.
Tech has never played any of the other four opponents in the tournament, and the contest versus Utah in February was the first time those two schools had ever met in softball competition.
