LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's basketball coach Bob Knight announced today that Bob Beyer has been named to the Red Raider coaching staff. Beyer's responsibilities include on-court coaching and recruiting. Beyer joins Pat Knight and Les Fertig on the Texas Tech staff.
"I couldn't be happier with these guys," Knight said. "We have the same beliefs in what we want to accomplish. They know how to work in the type of program I run.
"I had this staff set long before I was contacted by Texas Tech," Knight added. "This is the group I wanted when the opportunity to coach came around again."
Beyer recently served as an assistant coach at Northwestern University from 1997-00 under former Wildcat head coach Kevin O'Neill. Previously, Beyer served as head coach at Siena College from 1994-97. Beyer also served as an assistant at Siena and Wisconsin.
While at Wisconsin during the 1993-94 season, Beyer helped lead the Badgers to an 18-11 record and the school's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 47 years.
In addition to his 13 seasons as a collegiate assistant, Beyer served as head coach of the Empire State Games Adirondack Region Open Division team from 1988-93. His teams won a gold medal (1990), a silver medal (1988, 1993) and three bronze medals (1989, 1991, 1992), marking the first Adirondack Region Open team to win consecutive medals.
In 1983 during his senior year of college, Beyer began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Alfred University. Beyer played three seasons there before suffering a career-ending injury.
A native of LeRoy, N.Y., Beyer graduated from Alfred University with a Bachelor of Arts in history and minors in coaching, writing and secondary education. He also earned a Master of Science in curriculum planning and development from the University of Albany in 1989.
