LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team lost the first of a two-game series to seventh-ranked Oklahoma, 8-0, in five innings of Friday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field, as the visiting Sooners erupted for eight runs over the final three innings to take the win.
Tech (28-17) starter Amanda Renfro sat down the first six Sooner hitters in the contest, but ran into a little trouble in the third. After a leadoff single to center by Ashli Barrett, Kelly Braitsch delivered a two-out, two-run home run that just cleared the wall in right field for a 2-0 OU advantage.
In the fourth the defending national champions added to their lead, thanks to a solo home run to the opposite field from Andrea Davis to lead off the frame. Jennifer Stump scored later in the inning on a RBI single to left by Leah Gulla, and Erin Evans scored on a bunt from LaKisha Washington.
Oklahoma (33-7) got three unearned runs in the fifth for the 8-0 lead, applying the mercy rule and ending the game after just five innings.
Tech had four hits in the first three innings of OU starter Jennifer Stewart (22-3), with senior Shauna Briggs collecting two of the four hits. Britney Stolle also added a double and Sandy Butler beat out an infield single in the third. But Stewart settled in and struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Renfro (25-14) allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five in four innings of work, only her second loss in six career outings versus the Sooners.
The two teams conclude the two-game series Saturday at noon at Rocky Johnson Field in what will be a busy day in Red Raider sports. The Tech baseball team plays Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field, with the alumni football scrimmage at 6 p.m. and the Red and Black spring football game at 7 p.m. at Lowrey Field.
