LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's basketball coach Bob Knight announced today that Chris Beard has been named to the Red Raider coaching staff. Beard is the team's third assistant coach. Beard joins Pat Knight, Bob Beyer and Les Fertig on the Texas Tech staff.
"I couldn't be happier with these guys," Knight said. "We have the same beliefs in what we want to accomplish. They know how to work in the type of program I run.
"I had this staff set long before I was contacted by Texas Tech," Knight added. "This is the group I wanted when the opportunity to coach came around again."
Beard recently served as head coach at Seminole State College in Seminole, Okla., where he led SSC to a 25-6 record and a top ranking of No. 4 nationally in the NJCAA poll. All nine sophomores on last year's squad graduated and received scholarships to four-year universities, including six Division I players.
Prior to last season at SSC, Beard was the head coach for a season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College. In his one season at the helm, Beard led FSCC to a third-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference and a 19-11 record. The record reflected the first winning season in 10 years at the school.
Beard was an assistant coach at North Texas from 1997-99, where the 1997-98 recruiting class ranked 18th nationally. From 1996-97, he served as an assistant at Abilene Christian and helped lead ACU to a third-place finish in the Lone Star Conference.
He also has coached at University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and was a student assistant at Texas from 1992-95. Beard received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Texas in 1995 and a master's of education from ACU in 1998.
