COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tracy Cartier beat out an infield single, allowing Amanda Douglas to score and Amanda Renfro shut out the Missouri Tigers for the second straight day, as the Texas Tech softball team took a 1-0 victory in Big 12 action Sunday afternoon.
Neither team could manage much offense until the Red Raiders (30-18, 8-6 Big 12) were able to scratch across a run in the fifth. Designated player Douglas doubled to right center with two outs, and Eva Harshman followed with a walk.
Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Cartier grounded near the second base bag. Cartier beat out the play, allowing Douglas to score, but Harshman was thrown out at the plate on a bang-bang play trying to score from second.
The Tigers (25-24, 4-9) did not manage more than one base runner in an inning, getting a walk by Lindsey Jacoby, a single from Melanie Fisher in the second and Karen Williams reaching on a throwing error in the fifth. Jacoby was called out for leaving early, Fisher was erased on a double play, and Williams was thrown out trying to steal second.
Tech managed five hits in the contest, with the seven through nine hitters in the lineup accounting for three of the five. Douglas and Harshman both doubled and Cartier had the RBI single for the only run. Rebecca Eimen also had a double for the Red Raiders and Shauna Briggs beat out an infield single in the sixth.
Renfro (27-15) struck out five and allowed just one hit, her second straight one-hitter versus the Tigers. MU starter Stephanie Falk gave up five hits and one unearned run in suffering her second straight 1-0 defeat.
The win gives the Red Raiders six straight regular season victories over the Tigers, and also makes Tech 4-0 all-time in Columbia.
The Red Raiders host Iowa State next weekend at Rocky Johnson Field on the Tech campus, with Saturday's game beginning at 1 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch at noon.
