LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball squad scratched across a pair of runs and senior pitcher Amanda Renfro made it stand up for a 2-0 victory over Iowa State Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech seniors Shauna Briggs, Sandy Butler and Renfro were honored prior to the contest during Senior Day activities.
Tech held a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh, but the visiting Cyclones would not go away after winning Saturday's game. Iowa State got a leadoff walk from Erica Martinez to start the seventh, and Kimi Yoshizawa was then hit by the pitch. Amber Lessenger bounced into a fielder's choice, and Renfro got pinch-hitter Laura Browning to popout for the second out of the frame.
Mindy Ogan then struck out to end the contest, preserving the win. Renfro got her 365th strikeout of the season against Ogan, setting a new Big 12 record for strikeouts in a season, passing the mark set by Christa Williams of Texas in 1998.
The Cyclones got a leadoff infield single from Julia Lindsay to begin the game, but she was stranded at second to end the inning.
Tech's Carmen Grindell doubled off the centerfield wall to start the second inning, and moved to third on a groundout by Andrea Joachims. Britney Stolle's two-out single to center plated Grindell for a 1-0 Tech lead.
The Red Raiders tried to add to the lead in the third after Butler doubled with one out. Rebecca Eimen followed with a walk, and both runners moved up on a groundout by Briggs.
Falling behind 2-0 in the count, Iowa State pitcher Jen Bice intentionally walked Grindell to load the bases. After fouling off several pitches and working the count full, Joachims flied out to right, ending the threat.
Once again Tech threatened to add to the lead in the fifth. Tracy Cartier beat out an infield single to start the inning, and Butler followed with a single to center. Eimen put down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out.
Briggs grounded to short, and Cartier was cut down at the plate trying to score. But Grindell lined a double just inside the left field line, plating Butler for a 2-0 Red Raider advantage. Joachims then flied to deep right center to end the inning.
In the sixth, Eva Harshman singled and Cartier bunted her way on with two outs. But Butler grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning, as the Red Raiders stranded eight in the contest.
Renfro picked up the victory (28-16), allowing just a fourth-inning double after the single to start the game while striking out four. Bice (9-14) took the loss, allowing eight hits and two runs with four strikeouts.
Butler had a pair of hits and scored once for the Red Raiders, while Grindell doubled twice and scored the game's first run. Cartier also singled twice in the contest for Tech.
The Red Raiders conclude their regular season with a doubleheader against Texas on Wednesday in Austin. The first game of the twinbill begins at 5 p.m. with the second contest to follow.
