LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Eva Harshman drove in three runs, including belting a solo home run, as the Red Raiders defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 6-3, in Big 12 softball action Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Jayhawks (20-18, 4-3 Big 12) took an early lead with an unearned run in the third on two Tech errors, and held a 3-0 advantage after a two-run single to left from Katie Campbell in the top of the fourth.
But the bottom of the Red Raiders (26-15, 4-3) order provided the spark in Saturday's game, with five-hole hitter Jana Baker starting the rally in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out walk. Andrea Joachims the singled to left, her second hit of the day, and Amanda Douglas came in to run for Baker at second.
Britney Stolle then bounced to the pitcher, who could not make the play, loading the bases for Harshman. The junior leftfielder drilled a shot off the glove of KU third baseman Megan Urquhart and into left field, plating Douglas and Joachims. Stolle scored on the play when the throw from left field sailed high and into a dead-ball area, knotting the contest at three.
Rebecca Eimen then walked and stole second before Tracy Cartier beat out an infield single, scoring Harshman from third. The throw to first on Cartier's grounder got away, allowing Eimen to score for a 5-3 Tech advantage.
Harshman then provided the final margin with a solo shot to left in the sixth, giving her a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs and two runs scored. Joachims also had a pair of hits for the Red Raiders, as the six through nine hitters in the lineup went 6-for-11 with three RBIs and five runs scored in the contest.
Amanda Renfro (23-12) took the win for Tech, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. Kirsten Milhoan (6-8) suffered the loss for Kansas, giving up four unearned runs on four hits with two walks.
The two teams finish the two-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech hits the road next Wednesday for a doubleheader at Baylor before hosting the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners next Friday and Saturday.
