LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Shauna Briggs' double to left center in the fourth plated Sandy Butler, and Red Raider hurler Amanda Renfro made it stand up, as the Red Raiders took a 1-0 victory over Kansas in conference softball action Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
Tech (27-15, 5-3 Big 12) did not have a hit in the contest until a one-out single to right by Butler in the fourth. Butler then stole second before Briggs double into the gap in left center, plating her teammate with the game's only run.
Kirsten Milhoan (6-9) allowed only those two hits in the contest in four innings of work. Kara Pierce got the final six outs of the contest for Kansas (20-19, 4-4).
Renfro (24-12) gave up eight hits and struck out four in bettering her career mark against the Jayhawks to 6-1. Her career ERA versus Kansas now stands at 0.64 in nine outings.
The Jayhawks had several scoring chances, stranding nine runners in the contest, including a pair in the seventh. In the final inning, Shelly Musser and Erin Garvey each beat out infield singles with two outs, but Renfro got three-hole hitter Megan Urquhart to fly out to shallow center for the final out of the contest.
Courtney Wright and Amy Hulse both had singles in the second for KU, but Christi Musser bounced into a fielder's choice and Leah Hansen grounded out to second to end the threat. Christi Musser doubled to start the fifth, and Garvey drew a two-out walk, but Urquhart bounced into a fielder's choice to end that inning.
The two teams finish the two-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech hits the road next Wednesday for a doubleheader at Baylor before hosting the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners next Friday and Saturday.
