Jones Named Female Student Athlete Of The Year

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior volleyball player Janelle Jones was named Texas Tech's Female Student-Athlete of the Year and the recipient of the Jeannine McHaney Award on Sunday night at the Academic Awards Banquet held at United Spirit Arena.
"I am deeply honored to have recieved such a great recognition," said Jones. "I have been extremely blessed with great coaches and wonderful atheletes around me."
Jones, a four-year letterman from Denver, Colo., led the 2000 volleyball squad in blocking and was second on the team in hitting percentage. She guided the squad to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii and an overall record of 24-9. Jones has been named to the Dean's List twice and the President's List three times while being named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll each year since 1996.
In 1998, she was elected as one of the 48 collegiate players to participate in the USA Volleyball National Team Trials and spent her 1999 summer training with a volleyball team for the Pan-Am Games. The Big XII Conference recently recognized Janelle as the 1999-2000 Community Outreach Award winner. Janelle was also the Texas Tech representative to the National Leadership Conference in 2000 and received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award in 1999. She made the First Team Academic All-Big XII Team in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
In May of last year, she graduated cum lade with a degree in Family Studies and is currently working on her master's degreee in Marriage and Family Therapy where she holds a cumulative GPA of 3.50
