LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team travels to Austin, Texas, Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Texas Longhorns that will conclude Big 12 action and regular season play for the Red Raiders. The twinbill at Red and Charline McCombs Field on the UT campus begins at 5 p.m. with the second contest to follow.
The Red Raiders stand 31-19 overall this season, 9-7 in the Big 12, good for fourth place, just one game behind third-place Kansas. Tech split two games this past weekend with Iowa State, winning Sunday's contest, 2-0, on Senior Day.
Senior hurler Amanda Renfro threw a two-hit shutout in the victory, and set a new conference mark for strikeouts in a season with 365, passing Christa Williams of Texas. Tech's Carmen Grindell went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI in the win, and senior Sandy Butler added a pair of hits.
Texas leads the series, 6-2, since 1996, with regular season matchups hard to come by over the last few years due to inclement weather.
Last season Tech defeated the 19th-ranked Longhorns, 4-0, at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Red Raiders dropped a 1-0 decision to UT in Lubbock, with the second game of the doubleheader canceled because of rain and a bad wind storm.
The two teams also met in the Big 12 Tournament last season, with Tech winning, 8-4.
Texas won the only meeting in 1999, 1-0, in the conference tourney, and won twice in 1998, 3-0 at the league tournament and 1-0 in Austin. The Red Raiders dropped a pair of games in 1997, 3-0 and 6-0, in Lubbock.
Tech will get the weekend off from competition while taking finals before heading to Oklahoma City, Okla., and ASA Hall of Fame Stadium for the Big 12 Tournament, May 9-12.
