OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Carmen Grindell's leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh provided Texas Tech with a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M in elimination play of the Big 12 Tournament Friday morning at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Grindell drove a 1-2 pitch just beyond the centerfield wall for her second homer in the last two games for the Red Raiders, who defeated the Aggies for the second time in three games this season.
Neither team could muster much offense against the two starters, Amanda Renfro for Tech and Jessica Slataper for Texas A&M, as the two pitchers allowed just seven hits in the contest and struck out 13.
The Red Raiders managed a two-out double in the first by Shauna Briggs, and after an intentional walk to Grindell, Andrea Joachims struck out.
Crystal Martin singled to start the second for the Aggies and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Selena Collins. But Renfro struck out Lisa Klam to end the threat.
Texas A&M also had singled in the third, fifth and sixth, but no runner advanced past first base, and Tech ended the sixth with a Renfro to Rebecca Eimen to Grindell doubleplay.
Britney Stolle led off with a single in the fifth for Tech, but the Red Raiders could not advance her and the inning ended with Stolle stranded at first.
Renfro (31-17) got the win, giving up four hits and striking out four. Slataper (10-7) suffered the loss, striking out nine, in taking her second 1-0 defeat by Tech this season.
The Red Raiders advance to take on undefeated Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. tonight. A Tech win would force a second game between the two teams Saturday morning to determine who would advance to Saturday afternoon's championship game, set for 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest.
