TUCSON, Ariz. - Texas Tech's Sandy Butler drove in a run and scored once as the Red Raiders defeated St. Peter's College in an elimination game Thursday night in Region I of the NCAA Tournament at Hillenbrand Stadium on the University of Arizona campus.
Tech (36-23) stays alive to take on Hawaii at 2:30 p.m. local time Friday. The Wahine dropped a 2-1 decision to Southwest Texas State on Thursday afternoon to drop into the loser's bracket.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the first after Sandy Butler lead off the contest with an infield single. Rebecca Eimen followed with a walk, but Eimen was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Shauna Briggs, leaving runners at the corners. Briggs stole second and Carmen Grindell then walked, loading the bases.
Butler scored on a wild pitch by SPC's Sandy Attanasio, giving Tech a 1-0 edge. Jana Baker then missed a double by about two feet down the left field line, hooking a line drive just foul before striking out. Andrea Joachims then struck out, ending the inning with the Red Raiders scoring just once.
Tech added to the lead in the second when Britney Stolle singled to start the inning and went to second on an infield groundout. Tracy Cartier then beat out an infield single, putting runners on the corners. Cartier stole second before Butler singled, plating Stolle. The throw from the rightfielder hit the umpire and bounced away, allowing Cartier to score on the play for a 3-0 Red Raider advantage.
St. Peter's cut into the lead in the bottom of the second after Candace Winder singled to left to leadoff. Aimee Barsalona drew a walk and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Pam DeLuca. Winder scored on a passed ball and Danielle Bronner singled to plate Barsalona, cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Red Raiders had base runners in every inning, but could not push any more runs across. Baker singled in the third and was forced on a fielder's choice, and Cartier beat out an infield single in the fourth but was also out on a fielder's choice.
A leadoff single to center by Briggs in the fifth was erased on a doubleplay ground ball, and Stolle's one-out single to left in the sixth was followed by two ground ball outs, ending the inning.
Tech turned doubleplays in the third and fourth, with Joachims catching a bunt and doubling off a runner in the third before a strike out-throw out twin-killing erased another runner in the fourth for St. Peter's.
Amanda Renfro (33-18) got the win for Tech, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts. Attanasio (22-10) took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits.
