DALLAS, Texas - The Big 12 Conference honored 50 student-athletes who have been named to the 2001 Softball Academic All-Big 12 Team announced Wednesday.
Texas Tech had four players receive the honor, including senior Shauna Briggs, and sophomore Amanda Douglas, Ashley Ready and Jana Baker. Briggs, Douglas and Ready were all named to the first team, while Baker made the second team.
Briggs was named to the second team last season, while the other three Red Raiders made their first appearance on the academic all-conference team.
On the squad there are 24 repeat performers from softball academic all-conference teams, including six student-athletes being named to the academic team for the fourth time. These seniors include Baylor's Naomi Fitzgerald, Iowa State's Kristin Ferguson, Missouri's Stephanie Falk and Karen Williams, Nebraska's Jamie Fuente, and Texas' Tiffiny Valdehueza.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the softball academic all-league squad consisted of 40 first team members with 10 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Pitchers must have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 35 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Many of these student-athletes will be in competition at the sixth Big 12 Conference Softball Tournament at Don Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Wednesday-Saturday. Nebraska is defending Big 12 tourney champion and 2001 conference regular-season champion. The Huskers will enter the event as the No. 1 seed.
