LUBBOCK, Texas - Iowa State shortstop Jake Brown has signed to play baseball at Texas Tech next season and is one of two players added to the 2002 newcomer baseball class. The announcement was made on Thursday by Texas Tech head baseball coach Larry Hays.
Brown, a native of Prescott Valley, Ariz. and former Yavapai Junior College product, played last season at Iowa State and announced his plans today to come to Texas Tech after Iowa State announced in April that they would be cutting the baseball program beginning in 2002. Brown was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team in Oklahoma City after batting .500 over the course of three games. On the season, Brown played in just 33 games but managed to hit .273 with 27 hits, 15 runs, four doubles and 12 RBI. Brown will come to Texas Tech as an infielder.
The final signee announced on Thursday is Eric Kitchen, an infielder from the Community College of Southern Nevada. Kitchen, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., hit .372 for the Coyotes this season with four home runs, eight triples, 19 stolen bases and 53 RBI. Kitchen is the fifth player signed by Texas Tech from Southern Nevada but only four will attend Tech next year. John DiBetta signed a free-agent contract prior to the start of the Big 12 Tournament.
