By Tamara Metcalfe - Texas Tech Media Relations - Red Raider linebacker, Lawrence Flugence, has made a huge impact for Texas Tech football in his young career. The 6-2, 245-pound linebacker was the driving force in the defense last season that finished with three shutouts and a bowl appearance.
Perhaps the most intriguing statistic about his career is the leap he made from his freshman and sophomore seasons. In 1999, the middle linebacker recorded only six tackles. Last season, as a sophomore, he led his team with 156 tackles and finished fourth in the nation.
Flugence, whom teammates refer to as "Flu" doesn't seem to be overconfident on the 2001 season. "There is always room to improve as long as I am playing," said the linebacker, "and I like that pressure...it makes me push harder each day."
Flugence, a Houston native, began playing football at nine years old and idolized Lawrence Taylor, who shared his name, respectively. He went on to star at Klein High School in Spring, Texas, where he was a team captain and first-team all-district 16-5A selection.
"I decided to come to Texas Tech on my first visit," said Flu. "I knew right from the beginning that this was the place for me because of all the amazing people involved in the community and the athletic program."
In 1998, he came to Texas Tech as a redshirt freshman. The next season he played in all 11 games and moved to defensive end from linebacker, recording six tackles, three solo. After the 1998 season, Tech hired defensive coordinator, Greg McMackin, who Flugence said was responsible for his quantum leap from a Tech football player to one of the most publicized athletes on the team.
"Coach McMackin was the one who believed in me and said I could play when I didn't think I could...he inspired me to be the best when I changed positions. It's not all about football to coach. I can talk about anything to him...he is a real friend. I think his confidence is what inspired me to believe in myself."
His other inspiration comes from his mother, Delores, and two older brothers. "My family does not always get to see me play because Houston is so far away, however, I know that they are always with me. My family is really supportive and I am so fortunate to have them."
This year is a little different than the past, said Flugence, because he has seen more on the field and is one of the most experienced players on the team.
"My main personal goals this year are to make more big plays that make an impact," said the junior who has a laid-back personality. "...it's not to lead my team in tackles or anything...I just want to make the plays that mean something."
In January 2001, Flugence got a Chinese tattoo on his arm that reflects his new attitude: Relentless pursuit of perfection. He said it reminds him to stay focused on his dreams and to constantly work hard towards his goals.
With a combination of his athletic ability, winning attitude, and a powerful defense to back him up-Flugence will continue to be one of the best linebackers in the country.
