Texas Tech Cross Country Teams Start Season Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country teams will begin the 2001 season this Sat., Sept.8, at Mae Simmons Park. Both the men's and women's cross country teams will host the Red Raider Open begining at 9:00 a.m.
The men's cross country team has six returning lettermen and look to surpass its ninth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships and its10th finish at the NCAA Mountain Regionals in 2000. Mesquite native, Scott Moore, placed 39th at the Big 12 meet last year and leads the Red Raiders into the season as their No. 1 runner. The two captains on the men's squad are Moore and Dwayne Benoit from Abilene, Texas. Benoit received all conference honors in the indoor mile in 2000.
The women's team has five returning runners. In the 2000 season, the Raiders finished 10th at the Big 12 meet and 12th at the NCAA Championships.
With junior standout Shannon Spalding from Rockport, Texas, leading the way as the No. 1 runner, the women's cross country team has high hopes for 2001. Spaulding is the team's captain who finished third at the Big 12 indoor finals and 14th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800 meters.
