The Texas Tech volleyball team completed the first day of action in the annual Four Points Sheraton Red Raider Classic with an unblemished record of 2-0 by knocking off Stephen F. Austin and UTEP.
Tech's two wins on Friday gives the team an overall record of 4-2 heading into the final day of the Red Raider Classic. Texas Tech is scheduled to play the Lamar Cardinals at noon on Saturday and then wrap up the day with a 4 p.m. match against Ohio.
Stephen F. Austin gave Tech a scare in the first match of the day as the Lady Jacks took advantage of key Texas Tech hitting errors and escaped with a 30-26 win in game-one. The game ended on a controversial call as officials ruled Yolanda Cumbess over the net giving SFA the game point. The call merely served as a wake up call as Cumbess paced Tech with four kills in the next game that saw the Red Raiders even the match with a 30-25 win.
Texas Tech was able to pull away from SFA behind the superior hitting of freshman Kelly Johnson. Johnson pounded out 16 kills in the match to help lead Tech to a 4-1 (26-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-20) win.
The UTEP Miners gave Texas Tech all they could want but Tech was able to pull off one of the most difficult three-game match wins in recent history. After losing the first game 30-27, UTEP forced Tech to grueling standoff as both Teams scored a total of 76 points before the Red Raiders were able to escape with a 39-37 win off a hard hit kill by junior Ann Romjue. Texas Tech took the match 3-0 (30-27, 39-37, 30-21) behind senior Heather Hughes-Justice's 15 kills and eight digs.
