LUBBOCK, Texas - The NCAA released its first defensive football statistics of the season and Texas Tech senior Lawrence Flugence (Klein, Texas) is at the top of the tackles chart. The All-American linebacker is averaging 17.2 tackles per game and has 86 on the season.
Flugence opened the season with 23 tackles at Ohio State and followed with 21 at SMU for his first back-to-back 20-tackle games of his career. He has led the team in every game this season. Additionally, Flugence has a tackle for loss, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup.
He ranks sixth all-time at Texas Tech and in the Big 12 Conference with 380 career tackles. He needs six more to move into fifth place at Tech and eight to move into fifth in the Big 12. If he continues his current pace, Flugence will finish his career as the Texas Tech and Big 12's all-time leading tackler with 517 career tackles.
In addition to Flugence, junior strong safety Ryan Aycock (Lubbock, Texas) ranks 15th nationally with 12 tackles per game, while senior cornerback Ricky Sailor (Tampa, Fla.) is tied for 14th with 1.8 pass breakups per game.
