LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech outside hitter Kelly Johnson rattled off a game-high 18 kills on her way to a season-best .484 hitting percentage as the Red Raiders ended their four-match skid with a 3-0 sweep over the Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena.
The Red Raiders (8-11, 3-7) set the tone early in game one, jumping out to a 10-3 lead aided by a pair of Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) kills and the first of a career-high six aces on the night.
Oklahoma (4-14, 2-8) managed to cut the Tech lead down to five, 15-10, before the Red Raiders pulled away from the Sooners and took the first game, 30-20.
Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas) hit .727 after the first two games as Tech lead 2-0 heading into the intermission. The second game saw the Red Raiders leading 10-2 and 20-10 before Johnson's 13th kill of the night gave Tech the 30-20 win.
Mooney finished the night with 12 kills on 23 attempts (.478) as the only other Red Raider in double digit kills. Laura Grote (Austin, Texas) recorded 39 assists while Jessy Herrera (New Braunfels, Texas) added a team-high 10 digs.
Unlike in games past, tonight the Red Raiders did not let the Sooners off the hook. Oklahoma battled tough through the first 13 points of the final game and trailed by one, 7-6. But The Red Raiders would not allow the Sooners to take a lead in the match as Tech went on a 5-0 run and completed the sweep, 30-18.
Tech will have this weekend off before concluding its three-match home stand with the Kansas State Wildcats on Wed., Oct. 30.
