LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Melissa McGehee was named the Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week for her performance during the week of Sept. 30 - Oct. 6, the Big 12 office announced Monday. This marks the second time this season that McGehee has received the honor. She also earned the accolade on Sept. 2.
McGehee posted 48 kills in two matches last week as the Red Raiders fell to Kansas State in five matches in Manhattan, Kan., and upset the 21st-ranked Missouri Tigers. In both matches, the Kerrville, Texas native lead all players in kills with 21 against the Wildcats and 27 in four games versus the Tigers. At Kansas State the 5-10 senior recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 digs to go with her kills. She played an instrumental part in Tech's first win over a ranked opponent in over a year as she hit .293 against Missouri. For the week, McGehee accounted for a team-best 49 points.
In being honored for the second time this season, McGehee becomes just the second Red Raider volleyball player to be honored as POW twice in the same year joining Brande Brown (1997). With her first honor of the season, McGehee ended a two-year drought in which Tech did not have a player of the week.
Texas Tech will travel this week to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor before returning home for a three-match homestand, starting with Texas on Saturday.
